Abstract: The Asia-Pacific region has made significant progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). But the region’s achievements were undermined by the 2008 financial and economic crisis that originated in the developed countries but had its fallout on the region through its adverse impacts on the region’s exports, jobs, incomes, and reversal of capital flows. The crisis has also demonstrated that the Asia-Pacific region must rebalance itself and in future be more self-sustaining. Indeed, this represents a major opportunity to invest in itself. This report considers the supportive financial systems that countries in Asia and the Pacific will need to promote growth that is both inclusive and sustainable – “green growth” that will help them achieve the Millennium Development Goals while also stewarding the region’s natural resources for future generations.
