SUMMARY:Seminar: "The Technological Society: Revenue Forecasting and Optimization in Large Data Centers."
DESCRIPTION:Date & Hour: 31-October-2018\, 4:00 pm\n\nVenue: Seminar Hall 1\n\nTitle: The Technological Society: Revenue Forecasting and Optimization in Large Data Centers -by Professor Saibal Kar\, Centre for Studies in Social Sciences\, Kolkata.\n\nAbstract: The demand for storage and maintenance of data is not limited to facilitators of information technology only\, but has spread to all forms of businesses and individual users\, deep into private and public activities in several ways. The role of the data centers as host for the rapid technological advancements\, however\, seems little discussed in the related literature. The rising cost of power supply\, the crunch in storage space owing to high real estate prices\, the difficulty of acquiring land for industrial use in many developing countries\, etc.\, translate into important adjustment costs for data centers. These are expected to have considerable implications spanning economic and social interactions because data centers seem to have strong employment and social impact. It is important to predict the optimal size of operations in data centers as an endogenous outcome of the dynamic adjustments. We use constant elasticity of scale production functions for revenue and profit maximization and find increasing degree of concentration among data center operations. Further\, this paper offers factor analysis in order to identify the precise contribution of each factor input in the overall cost. We test the results for data centers located in the Asia-Pacific region.
