Urbanization in India:

A Perspective from Multiple Disciplines

Objective of the Conference

The objective of the one day conference organized as part of the silver jubilee year celebrations of Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) is to have a conversation on emerging issues on urbanization in India. The distinctiveness of the workshop is the gathering of select scholars and practitioners from the fields of architecture, development, economics, education, geography, human rights and sociology.

While we have a fair understanding of the macro picture on urbanization from data available as part of Census of India and surveys conducted by National Sample Survey Organisation, due to limitations of data, it has proved difficult to understand specific processes occurring in India’s cities. In light of this, the one day conference is an attempt to have a detailed and meaningful conversation on the contentious issue of land, city development plans, the perspectives emerging from field level studies and issues relating to rights based development.
