Dr. Rupayan Pal is an applied microeconomist. His primary fields of concentration are Industrial Organization Theory and Applied Microeconomic Theory (Resource and Environment, Labour, Development). He has conducted extensive research in economic theory, measurement problems, and some empirical issues of considerable academic and policy significance. The scope of his research is broad and covers a wide range of topics, including oligopoly theory and competition policy issues, innovation, environmental regulations, network externalities, international tax competition, tax efficiency, non-standard preferences of economic agents, corruption, union-firm bargaining and labour contracts, privatization, water disputes, electoral competition, and financial inclusion and development. He takes a special interest in studying strategic interactions among agents (individuals, firms, and instititutions) in market and non-market environments.
Several renowned peer-reviewed journals, including Economic Theory, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Regional Studies, Regional Science & Urban Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics, Economics Letters, Mathematical Social Sciences, Journal of Public Economic Theory, Resource and Energy Economics, Journal of Policy Modeling, Journal of Economics & Management Strategy, Journal of Institutional and Theoretical Economics, International Review of Economics & Finance, Manchester School and Journal of Economics have published his research articles.
He joined the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) in 2008 as a Visiting Fellow, after serving as Lecturer in Economics at the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics from 2005 to 2008. Since 2016, he has been a full Professor at IGIDR.
Dr Pal is a member of the Editorial Board of the Competition Commission of India Journal on Competition Law and Policy (since 2021). He previously served as Joint Managing Editor of the Journal of Quantitative Economics from 2010 to 2013. He also regularly serves as a referee for a number of journals.
An enthusiastic and dedicated teacher, Dr Pal actively integrates his research insights into his teaching, fostering a stimulating learning environment for his students.
