Dr. Rupayan Pal is an applied microeconomist. He has conducted extensive research in economic theory, measurement problems, and some empirical issues of considerable academic and policy significance. The scope of his research is broad and covers a wide range of topics, including oligopoly theory and competition policy issues, innovation, privatization, environmental regulations, network externalities, international tax competition, tax efficiency, non-standard preferences of economic agents, corruption, union-firm bargaining and labour contracts, water disputes, and financial inclusion and development.

He has published over 50 research articles in well-regarded, peer-reviewed journals, such as Economic Theory, Regional Studies, Regional Science & Urban Economics, Economics Letters, Environmental and Resource Economics, Mathematical Social Sciences, Journal of Public Economic Theory, Resource and Energy Economics, Journal of Policy Modeling, Journal of Economics & Management Strategy, Journal of Institutional and Theoretical Economics, and International Review of Economics & Finance.

He joined the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) in 2008 as a Visiting Fellow, after serving as Lecturer in Economics at the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics from 2005 to 2008. Since 2016, he has been a full Professor at IGIDR.

Dr Pal is a member of the Editorial Board of the Competition Commission of India Journal on Competition Law and Policy (since 2021). He previously served as Joint Managing Editor of the Journal of Quantitative Economics from 2010 to 2013. Dr Pal regularly acts as a referee for several esteemed journals, including Experimental Economics, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Review of Industrial Organization, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Mathematical Social Sciences, Journal of Public Economic Theory, and Journal of the Operational Research Society.

An enthusiastic and dedicated teacher, Dr Pal actively integrates his research insights into his teaching, fostering a stimulating learning environment for his students.
