Geo-statistical Methods for Economic Analysis

IGIDR:  June 20 – 24, 2022

Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) is a deemed to be university and an advanced research institute established and fully funded by the Reserve Bank of India for carrying out research on development issues from a multi-disciplinary point of view. IGIDR is organising a workshop on Geo-statistical methods for economic analysis from June 20 to June 24 2022. The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Gaurav Arora who is an Assistant Professor in department of economics at IIIT Delhi. The initiative is supported by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

 Objectives of workshop

The principal objectives of the workshop are:

  • Introduction to remote sensing and GIS
  • Introduction to spatial data and spatial models: Geostatistical data; Lattice sata; and Point data
  • Characterising Spatial Autocorrelation, Fitting a Variogram, Spatial Prediction and Spatial Interpolation
  • Spatial Econometric Modelling
  • Hands-on applications on ArcGIS and R
 About the speaker

Gaurav Arora specialises in natural resource economics, agricultural economics, applied econometrics and remote sensing. As an empiricist, he enjoys developing and applying econometric models to tease out causal mechanisms that are rooted in the microeconomic theory for decision problems at the intersection of agricultural production and natural resource management. He is a recipient of Faculty Research Fellowship (2020-2022) at IIIT-Delhi; James R. Prescott scholarship (2016) for outstanding creativity in doctoral research; and Earl O. Heady Fellowship (2012) for academic excellence at Iowa State University (ISU). Prior to his PhD in Economics, he obtained M.S. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of Arizona; and B.Tech. in Environmental Engineering from Indian School of Mines Dhanbad.

 Dates

The Summer School will be held in offline mode at the Institute’s campus in Mumbai, from June 20th to June 24th, 2022. Participants are required to arrive by June 19th evening and be present during the entire duration of the Summer School.

 Application Procedure

Those who are interested to apply should upload:
 a) A one page expression of Interest outlining the usefulness of the workshop for their future work and career responsibilities
 b) A one page CV which must mention their institutional affiliation

Seats for the workshop are limited. Preference will be given to early career researchers and faculty from academic institutions, think tanks and government organizations. Applicants need to upload the required documents on the IGIDR website www.igidr.ac.in/gsme. The last date for submission of applications is May 5th, 2022. Selected applicants will be informed by May 15th, 2022.

 Expenses

The institute will provide free accommodation from June 19th to June 24th on twin sharing basis and full boarding. Participants will also be provided 3rd AC train fare by the shortest route. For queries please send email to bharti@igidr.ac.in
