IGIDR Seminar: ” Trade, Liquidity and Monetary Spillovers under Dollar Dominance “

Abstract:- The US dollar is the dominant currency for international trade invoicing. Additionally, US dollar bonds have low returns reflecting a liquidity premium over other assets traded internationally. Using these facts in a two-country model with international trade and liquidity we find a striking difference in spillovers of monetary policy emanating from the dominant country as compared to its non-dominant trading partner. While firm entry falls in both countries in response to a contractionary monetary policy in the dominant country,…

IGIDR Seminar: “Do status and identity shape adherence to advice?”

Abstract:- Many of the decisions we make are significantly shaped by advice from others. Despite this, limited research has explored whose advice we are more inclined to follow and how this influences social outcomes. In a lab-in-the-field survey experiment with approximately 3000 farmers in India, we examine whether the status and identity of the advisor influences cooperative behaviour. Our findings indicate that the advisor’s identity does not influence the likelihood of following advice when the advice promotes pro-social outcomes. However,…

IGIDR Seminar: ” Evolution of Income Inequality in India Since Independence: Results from India’s Household Income Surveys “

Abstract:- This paper examines the trajectory of income inequality in India since independence, relying on lesser-known but rigorously conducted household income surveys by private research institutions such as the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and People Research on India’s Consumer Economy (PRICE). The analysis primarily draws on findings from these studies over the past seven decades, revealing a complex landscape shaped by economic policies, demographic shifts, and political changes. While substantial economic growth has been achieved, income inequality…

IGIDR Seminar: ” Beneath the Thread: Decoding Worker Turnover and its Implications for the Indian Textile Industry “

Abstract:- This study examines worker turnover patterns and their determinants for a leading Indian textile export firm using a comprehensive four-pronged methodological approach: discussions with management, interviews of current workers, analysis of administrative panel data of workers, and a survey of former workers. The findings reveal a high annual worker turnover rate of 92-94%, with 60-70% of workers leaving within six months. While there is no significant gender variation in turnover, the migrant turnover rate is more than double that…

IGIDR Seminar: ” In search of sustainable food transitions”

Abstract:- The current food system transgresses many planetary boundaries while failing to supply healthy foods to all. Providing nutritious and sustainable food while not leaving anyone behind is a grand societal challenge. Calls for transitioning to more sustainable and equitable forms of food production and consumption – sometimes referred to as The Great Food Transformation – highlight various interventions, strategies and policies that are urgently needed; however, different stakeholders voice different narratives around the precise actions that should be taken.…

IGIDR Seminar: ” Journey to the (North, South, East, and) West: Global Spillovers of Chinese Monetary Policy “

Abstract:- Does Chinese monetary policy matter on a global stage? This study evaluates how Chinese monetary policy shocks are transmitted globally. We examine the role production linkages play in the global transmission of Chinese monetary policy shocks to global stock returns. Using a high-frequency measure of Chinese monetary policy shocks, we evaluate how Chinese monetary policy shocks propagate upstream and downstream through supply chains using a heterogeneous coefficient spatial autoregression (SAR) model. Three findings emerge. First, firms on both ends…

IGIDR Seminar: ” Conflicts and Consumption (with Anindya S. Chakrabarti (IIMA) and Abhishek Shaw (IIMA)) “

Abstract:- Land acquisition is a commonplace and hotly debated policy for the developing countries due to opposing views on adequacy of compensation, held by the government and land-owning households. Theories abound as to what would be a good design for compensation. But the empirical question remains open – how do households respond in terms of consumption when they disagree about the quantum of compensation? We estimate consumption responses of households in quasi-randomized setups with six different events of land-acquisition-related conflicts…
